Shelly King is to leave her role as Yasmeen Metcalfe on Coronation Street after almost 11 years, it has been confirmed.
The news comes amid a wave of departures of established characters from the soap, including Helen Worth (Gail), Sue Cleaver (Eileen), Sue Devaney (Debbie), Colson Smith (Craig) and Charlotte Jordan (Daisy), with more expected to follow in the months ahead.
Yasmeen moved onto the cobbles in summer 2014 with her husband Sharif, son Kal and grandchildren Alya (Sair Khan) and Zeedan (Qasim Akhtar), but a decade later only Alya remains as Sharif absconded, Kal died in a fire and Zeedan moved to London.
During her time on the street, Yasmeen's most notable storyline saw her get married to domestic abuser Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew), who eventually died while trying to kill her, and her most recent partner Stu (Bill Fellows) moved to Germany last year.
According to The Sun, King has already filmed her final scenes and will leave on screen in March, although the nature of Yasmeen's departure is currently unknown.
"This will be another blow for fans of the show, as Yasmeen is a much-loved character who's part of the fabric of Corrie," a source said.
"She's had some huge storylines since she joined the soap in 2014, and she'll be sorely missed by cast and crew.
"It's understood she is leaving so she can explore other projects."
Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7am on ITVX and at 8pm on ITV1.
