Chris Pine's rep denies "ridiculous" rumours that the actor was spit upon by co-star Harry Styles in Venice.

A spokesperson for Chris Pine has denied a "ridiculous" rumour that the actor was spit upon by Harry Styles at the Venice Film Festival.

The pair were appearing at a screening of their film Don't Worry Darling on Tuesday - after which footage of Styles taking his seat next to Pine went viral amid claims that it depicted the One Direction star spitting.

In a statement, Pine's rep reacted angrily to the clip, saying: "This is a ridiculous story - a complete fabrication and the result of an odd online illusion that is clearly deceiving and allows for foolish speculation.

"Just to be clear, Harry Styles did not spit on Chris Pine. There is nothing but respect between these two men and any suggestion otherwise is a blatant attempt to create drama that simply does not exist."

Styles took a more jovial approach to the suggestion, meanwhile, telling fans at a gig in Madison Square Garden on Wednesday: "I just popped very quickly to Venice to spit on Chris Pine... but fear not, we're back."

Don't Worry Darling - directed by Styles's rumoured girlfriend Olivia Wilde - is released later this month.
