Buckingham Palace issues a statement confirming that The Queen's health is a cause for concern for doctors.

Buckingham Palace has issued a statement confirming that The Queen's health has become a cause for concern for her team of doctors.

The 96-year-old has been gradually scaling back her public appearances in recent years due to her advancing age - and a series of mobility issues earlier this year forced her to pull out of a number of engagements, including several marking her 70 years on the throne.

Having formally appointed Liz Truss as the UK's new Prime Minister at Balmoral on Tuesday, the Queen was due to attend a virtual meeting of the privy council on Wednesday night but withdrew at the last moment on medical advice.

The statement issued by Buckingham Palace said: "Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen's doctors are concerned for Her Majesty's health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision.

"The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral."

Truss said in a statement: "The whole country will be deeply concerned by the news from Buckingham Palace this lunchtime.

"My thoughts - and the thoughts of people across our United Kingdom - are with Her Majesty The Queen and her family at this time."

Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, as well as Prince William, are now en route to Balmoral.
