Top Gear filming new series after coronavirus break

Filming on the new series of Top Gear is back "up and running" after an enforced pause due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Top Gear is being filmed in locations around the UK after an enforced pause due to coronavirus.

The pandemic brought production to a halt in March but in recent weeks hosts Freddie Flintoff, Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris have resumed filming for the new series, which will air on BBC Two later this year.

Speaking at a virtual session at the Edinburgh TV Festival, BBC's entertainment controller Kate Phillips said: "Top Gear is very much up and running, BBC Studios have been filming around the country. The big difference is that we won't be able to do all the foreign trips that we normally do in the series, although a couple were done before lockdown.

"What's really heartening about that is the inventiveness that they've brought to the table in terms of changing and doing all domestic films. They are very, very funny - proper belly laughs but proper gasps and spectacle as well. It's a really great watch.

"The boys have been respecting social distancing but of course they're in cars for most of it so it's actually all quite doable. It's been a massive challenge for production but they've done it really well."

The new run of episodes will represent the show's 29th series since its 2002 relaunch and the 74th series in its overall history.
