New female-led Star Wars series in works for Disney+?

Disney+ is reportedly developing a new Star Wars spinoff series centred around a female character.

A new TV series based around a female character from the Star Wars universe is reportedly in the works at Disney+.

The new show follows on from the success of spinoff show The Mandalorian, which helped launch the streaming service and has already been renewed for a second and third season.

According to Variety, Leslye Headland - co-creator of Netflix's Russian Doll - has been signed up to serve as showrunner and writer on the new spinoff.

The publication claims that it will be "a female-centric series that takes place in a different part of the Star Wars timeline than other projects".

Last year's Rise of Skywalker received an online backlash for its lack of screen time for female characters, in particular Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran), who was limited to a brief appearance despite being a major character in previous films.

Disney+ has two other Star Wars spinoffs in the works - a Rogue One prequel and an Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor.
