Liverpool's capacity to spend spend in the transfer market could see them make a move for either Newcastle United's Alexander Isak or Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez.

Liverpool's reported capacity to purchase a new striker in the summer transfer window is in excess of £100m due to their good financial health.

Mohamed Salah has fired the Reds to first place in the Premier League - 12 points ahead of Arsenal - and it would take a remarkable collapse in the final nine games for the Merseysiders to not win the title.

However, there is an argument that the Reds have been too reliant on the Egyptian in the final third, with the winger scoring 27 goals and registering 17 assists in 29 games, contributing to nearly 64% of his team's goals in the top flight.

Striker Darwin Nunez has disappointed this campaign - scoring just five times in the league - and the likes of Newcastle United's Alexander Isak and Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez have been linked with a move to Anfield.

Though both forwards would be expensive, Football Insider claim that Liverpool will be able to spend significantly more than £100m on a new striker without breaching profit and sustainability rules.

Would Isak work at Liverpool?

Isak managed to score his side's second goal against Liverpool in the EFL Cup final on March 16, helping the Magpies beat the Reds 2-1.

The Swede has found the back of the net 19 times in the Premier League this term, with only Erling Haaland (21) and Salah (27) having scored more.

Isak would undoubtedly be an upgrade on Nunez in terms of direct output, but there are concerns about whether the Toon forward would be able to get through as much work off the ball.

Nunez often makes unselfish runs to get the best out of Salah, and if Isak was asked to do similarly, perhaps his injury issues could become more of a problem.

The Newcastle attacker has only ever started 30 or more league games once in his entire career, and it is difficult to see him avoiding setbacks at Liverpool.

Would Alvarez work at Liverpool?

Alvarez has also been linked with a move to the Reds and having already played 67 times in the Premier League for Manchester City, he would likely be able to adapt well to English football.

The Argentine scored 11 goals and provided eight assists in 2023-24 for City in the league, and he has scored 11 times and registered three assists for Atletico Madrid in his last 17 games for the club.

It should be noted that the 25-year-old is on track to play 30 league matches for a third consecutive season, and he has rarely suffered injury.

Perhaps Alvarez's biggest strength at Liverpool would be his ability to facilitate Salah given he is a relentless runner, with the forward having ran the most distance of any Atletico player in this season's Champions League (96.5km).

However, Liverpool's transfer activity up front could significantly alter should Salah leave the club upon the expiry of his contract in the summer, but the Reds should at least be able to spend significant sums on a replacement.
