Rickie Lambert: 'Mauricio Pochettino would be popular choice as England manager'

Former Southampton and England striker Rickie Lambert admits that he would love to see Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino manage the Three Lions in future.

Former Southampton striker Rickie Lambert has backed Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino for the England job in the future.

The 35-year-old Englishman, who retired from football earlier this month, played under Pochettino for 18 months after the Argentine took charge of Southampton in January 2013.

In Guillem Balague's new book A Brave New World, serialised in the Daily Mail, the 45-year-old expressed his eagerness to take the England reins at some point in his career.

"He's brilliant," Lambert said of Pochettino on Sky Sports News. "His man-management is spot on. Technically, he's brilliant.

"I would love him to be an England manager, if there's any chance that the FA could get him in the future, they should jump at it, without a doubt.

"The lads would love playing for him, everyone who has ever played under him, especially the British lads, love him."

Pochettino began his managerial career in 2009 by taking charge at Espanyol, the club where he saw out his playing career.
