The Detroit Lions have named Joe Lombardi as their new offensive coordinator.
Lombardi, who is the grandson of legendary NFL coach Vince Lombardi, joins the Lions following a successful seven-season stint with the New Orleans Saints.
He began his Saints career as an offensive assistant before being promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2009, helping Drew Brees to reach the Pro Bowl every year since.
It is understood that the Lions are hopeful Lombardi can have a similar impact on Matthew Stafford, who struggled towards the end of this season.
The Saints won the Super Bowl with Lombardi as quarterbacks coach, beating the Indianapolis Colts when they were led by Jim Caldwell, who was recently named as the new head coach of the Lions.
It remains unclear who will call the plays for Detroit next season, with Caldwell understood to be considering doing so himself.
