New York Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride has announced that he is retiring after 40 years of coaching.

The 62-year-old joined the NFC East side in 2004 as the quarterbacks coach, before taking charge of the offense in 2007.

He told the team's website: "It's hard to say, 'It's time', to finally do it, it's a very unnatural feeling. I've been telling my wife for years I was going to do it.

"I've enjoyed every minute of coaching. Certainly the last 10 years with the Giants has been a special time, to be part of the bringing the Super Bowls to New York and New Jersey and the Giants organisation.

"I've thoroughly enjoyed the development of some of the young players that we brought along, certainly starting with [quarterback] Eli [Manning]. But [also] Steve Smith and Victor Cruz, they hadn't had a Pro Bowl receiver since 1968 and we brought two back to them. That's been fun."

Gilbride began coaching with the Idaho State Bengals in 1974, and took up his first NFL role with the Houston Oilers in 1989.
