Justin Gatlin sets 200m US Championships record

Justin Gatlin books his place at this summer's World Championships by winning the 200m in the US trials with a time of 19.57s.

Justin Gatlin recorded the fastest 200m time in 2015 as he stormed to victory at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships on Sunday.

The 33-year-old set a time of 19.57s at the meeting in Oregon, to beat his previous best of 19.68s, which he recorded in May.

He has now recorded the best times in the 100m and 200m this year, but Olympic champion Usain Bolt still holds the all-time record in each event.

"I wanted to go out and make a statement and that's what I did today," Gatlin told reporters. "That's probably one of the best races I've had.

"I'm just honored to say I'm on that short list of Americans who have ran that fast. My body has never been there before. It hurt. But I'm feeling really good now."

Gatlin has now qualified for the 100m and 200m at this year's World Championships, which are due to be held in Beijing.
