Charles van Commenee says that it is "impossible" to expect every athlete to be fit and free of injury for the Olympics.

Team GB head coach Charles van Commenee has remained upbeat despite Phillips Idowu's injury scare.

The triple jumper's participation is currently in doubt following the revelation that he is suffering from a trapped nerve in his leg.

Van Commenee said that it is unrealistic to expect every athlete to be fit for the Games, but said that the team can still achieve their medal goals.

"I always knew we would not have all the medal contenders fit on the start line, it's impossible," said Van Commenee. "But we have 15 athletes in the medal zone so our success is not dependent on one athlete.

"We still have a good number of athletes so we have a realistic chance to hit the target."

The games officially get underway on Friday.
