Katarina Johnson-Thompson 'must work on mental side'

Denise Lewis claims that Katarina Johnson-Thompson needs to work on her mental approach to heptathlon after fouling out of the long jump.

Former Olympic champion Denise Lewis has suggested that Katarina Johnson-Thompson will need to "work on the mental side of hepathlon" if she is to win at major championships in the future.

The 22-year-old Liverpudlian was trailing Jessica Ennis-Hill after day one, but fouled out of the long jump on Sunday and dropped out of contention.

However, Lewis has warned that the youngster may need to alter her approach in order to take gold in the future.

"She's going to have to work on the mental side of heptathlon because it's an ever-changing event," Lewis told BBC Sport.

"I've been encouraged by what I've seen from her despite what's happened. We're talking about a fraction the distance by which she got it wrong."

Ennis-Hill leads by 86 points ahead of the final event, the 800m.
