Usain Bolt has beaten Justin Gatlin to take gold in the men's 100m final in Beijing.

Bolt, who stumbled in his semi-final before taking first, had looked short of his best throughout the rounds.

However, the Jamaican recovered from a sluggish start to overtake Gatlin in the final strides and claim his ninth gold at the World Championships.

Gatlin, who has earned a reputation in some circles as a villain of athletics after serving two previous doping bans, had run faster in the semi-finals and was unbeaten in 28 races heading into the Beijing final.

However, the American was forced to settle for silver in 9.80s as Bolt came through to take his third world title at 100m, matching the feats of Maurice Greene and Carl Lewis.

US teenager Trayvon Bromell took joint bronze in his first major event, clocking 9.92s alongside Canadian Andre De Grasse as five of the field dipped under the 10-second barrier.

Tyson Gay, who won gold in Osaka in 2007, was unable to rediscover his form of old as he finished fifth, ahead of former world record holder Asafa Powell.
