Alexis Vastine battles past Patrick Wojcicki

France's Alexis Vastine overcomes Germany's Patrick Wojcicki in the Olympic welterweight competition.

France's Alexis Vastine had to work hard to overcome tough German Patrick Wojcicki in the Olympic welterweight competition.

The Frenchman had taken a 6-4 after the first round, but it was Wojcicki who landed the better quality punches, as two decent hooks seemed to temporarily stun Vastine.

However, Vastine's quality began to tell in the second stanza and a big right uppercut helped to preserve his two-point advantage heading into the deciding round.

Vastine had a speed advantage over his opponent, and kept his hands low as he looked to draw Wojcicki onto his punches.

Wojcicki tried to press the Frenchman in the final round, but was caught with more than he landed.

As the fight drew to a close, it was Vastine who finished the stronger and was awarded a 16-12 victory.
