Gavin Rees to retire after Gary Buckland bout

Former light-welterweight world champion Gavin Rees reveals that he will retire from boxing after his Cardiff showdown with Gary Buckland next weekend.

Former light-welterweight world champion Gavin Rees has revealed that he is proud of his achievements in boxing as he prepares to retire from the sport after his bout with Gary Buckland next weekend.

Rees possesses a distinguished professional record of 37 wins in 42 matches, but after a 16-year career, the Welsh fighter has admitted that he has struggled with injuries during his most recent training camps.

The 34-year-old is quoted by Sky Sports News as saying: "I will leave everything I have in the ring on May 17 and I am proud of everything I have achieved. Winning a world title was a dream come true.

"My trainer Gary Lockett has done a brilliant job getting me through training camps in the last few years but I can't keep doing it. I've had a fair few injuries and they are catching up with me."

Sports Mole will be providing live text commentary of the fight along with Lee Selby's WBC international featherweight clash with Romulo Koasicha and the highly-anticipated cruiserweight debut of Nathan Cleverly.
