Team GB's Olympic gold-winning canoe slalomist Etienne Stott has announced his retirement from the sport at the age of 37.

Together with partner Tim Baillie, Stott earned Great Britain a historic first canoe slalom gold with victory in the C2 event at London 2012 despite suffering from a recurring shoulder problem.

"It is time for me to announce the end of a huge chapter in my life," said Stott in a statement today.

"I consider myself both extraordinarily fortunate to have reached this point, and to have the full array of choices before me to take my life forward.

"Although I have won an Olympic gold medal at a home Olympics, I am sincere when I say that I value my journey in canoe slalom so much more."

Stott and Baillie failed to qualify for this year's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, while the men's C2 event is being removed from the competition schedule at Tokyo 2020.
