Australia pass 550 at Lord's

Australia reach 562-7 at tea on day two of the second Ashes Test at Lord's thanks to a double century from Steve Smith.

A double century from Steve Smith has helped Australia reach 562-7 at tea on day two of the second Ashes Test at Lord's.

The tourists have continued to boost their total at the crease, but England have been rewarded for their hard work by claiming four more wickets.

Stuart Broad proved dangerous with the ball after the restart, dismissing Adam Voges (25) and Mitchell Marsh (12) in quick succession.

However, the imperious Smith remained in charge out in the middle and was soon approaching the 200-run mark with debutant Peter Nevill providing solid support.

Smith eventually reached his double century in fitting fashion with a boundary before the 26-year-old lapped up the applause from those inside Lord's.

The batsman did not last much longer though, with Joe Root claiming his wicket lbw for a career-best 215 following a review. Nevill's time out in the middle was ended just a couple of overs later when he was caught by Moeen Ali off another Root delivery for 45.

Mitchell Johnson (12*) and Mitchell Starc (11*) will resume at the crease when the final session of the day gets underway.
