Eoin Morgan: 'Back to basics approach needed for England following heavy defeat'

Eoin Morgan wants to see England "concentrate on simple things" following a poor start to their Cricket World campaign.

England skipper Eoin Morgan is hopeful that his side can bounce back from their poor start to the Cricket World Cup in order to finally build some momentum.

Last week's 111-run defeat against Australia was followed up with another crushing blow as they fell to a rampant New Zealand side in their second pool game this morning.

The Black Caps required just 12.2 overs to chase down 124 to condemn England to an eight-wicket loss at the Westpac Stadium.

Speaking to Sky Sports News after the one-sided affair, Morgan admitted that the conditions took him a little by surprise having elected to bat first against the tournament co-hosts.

"I thought New Zealand bowled really well, conditions suited them," he said. "It swung throughout the whole of our innings, which was unexpected. We expected conditions to be batter-friendly, if anything.

"Credit goes to them, they built pressure and bowled pretty well. Our first two games are the most difficult of the group, they were always going to be a tough start to a World Cup.

"From here we concentrate on simple things moving forward and hopefully get a win as soon as possible under our belt and gain some momentum from there."

England are now rooted to the bottom of Pool A ahead of their must-win clash against Scotland on Monday.
