India survived three overs at the end of the first day of the second Test after Australia had made a strange declaration in an attempt to take advantage of the favourable bowling conditions.
Before tea, Michael Clarke and Mitchell Wade put on a stand of 124 to ease the pressure on the tourists after a sticky morning in Chennai.
In the final session today, Wade went for 62 before Moises Henriques, Glenn Maxwell and Peter Siddle all went for small scores.
Clarke was then bowled nine runs short of his century by Ravindra Jadeja and the Aussie captain decided to declare on 237-9 to have the chance of a few overs at the Indian batsman.
The hosts, who lead the four-match series 1-0, finished the day on 5-0 with Virender Sehwag on four and Murali Vijay yet to score.
