South Africa wicket-keeper Mark Boucher will undergo eye surgery this evening after an incident against Somerset in which he appeared to be hit in the eye by a bail.
The injury occurred after spinner Imran Tahir bowled Gemaal Hussain, causing the bail to flick up in the 35-year-old's eye.
He was taken to hospital and team manager Mohammad Moosajee confirmed the need for surgery on the Cricket South Africa website.
Moosajee said: "Mark suffered a laceration to the sclera of his left eye.
"He will undergo emergency exploratory surgery in the next few hours, after which the ophthalmologist will be able to determine the extent of the damage."
Boucher made his Test debut for South Africa in 1997.
