South Africa retain number one title by defeating Australia in Test series

South Africa win the third and final Test against Australia by 309 runs as they retain their spot at the top of the world rankings.

South Africa have retained their title as the world's number one Test side after defeating Australia by 309 runs to clinch the three-Test series 1-0.

The home side faced a mammoth task at the beginning of the day as they entered the crease needing 592 runs to win the series but the likes of Dale Steyn and Robin Peterson were on fine form for the Proteas as they both snatched three wickets each.

Peterson managed to dismiss Ricky Ponting for just eight runs as the Australian batsman bid farewell to his Test career after announcing his retirement last week.

Mitchell Starc was able to bring up a half ton off just 32 balls in the evening session but his efforts weren't enough to launch a fightback for the home side.
