Great Britain's Becky James settles for sprint silver in Rio

Team GB's Becky James is forced to settle for silver in the women's sprint final as Germany's Kristina Vogel claims gold.

Great Britain's Becky James has been forced to settle for silver in the women's sprint final at the Rio Olympics.

James had overcome Elis Ligtlee in the semi-finals, but could not pick up an unexpected gold as Germany's Kristina Vogel emerged victorious in straight rides.

Both races were close, but James was pipped to the line on each occasion and in the end picked up her second silver of the Games having also made the podium in the keirin.

The Welshwoman, who moments before had witnessed teammate Katy Marchant claim bronze, adds to Team GB's success in the velodrome on a day that also saw Laura Trott win an unprecedented fourth Olympic gold.

James was world champion in the event in 2013, but has since been plagued by injuries.
