Peter Wright: I will "smash" Michael van Gerwen in our next match

Peter Wright insists that he will "smash" Michael van Gerwen in their next match after the Dutchman criticised his theatrics during their Premier League match on Thursday.

World Championship runner-up Peter Wright has insisted that he did nothing wrong during his Premier League clash with Michael van Gerwen on Thursday evening.

During the fifth leg of the contest in Dublin, Wright stopped momentarily to interact with the crowd before attempting to hit the bullseye to complete a 161 checkout, while in the next leg, he crouched down in an attempt to find a better angle to find the treble 20.

Van Gerwen responded by claiming that Wright showed a lack of respect towards him during the match but Wright laughed off the Dutchman's outburst, while predicting that he will "smash" the reigning world champion in their next encounter.

The 44-year-old told Sky Sports News: "There was nothing wrong with it at all. I was told off the other week for not doing it.

"Next time, I will get it against him. I don't give a monkey's. That's the way that I play. If he doesn't like it, tough."

When asked what will happen when the two players next meet on television, the Scot added: "I will smash him. He's going to have some."

Van Gerwen won the match 7-5 after hitting a 128 checkout in the final leg.
