Michael van Gerwen remains on course to defend World Grand Prix title

Defending champion Michael van Gerwen reaches the semi-finals of the World Grand Prix with a comfortable win over Jamie Lewis.

Michael van Gerwen has moved a step closer to defending his World Grand Prix title with a 3-0 victory against Jamie Lewis.

The world number one dropped just three legs in Thursday's last-eight tie to set up a semi-final showdown with Lewis's Welsh compatriot Mark Webster.

The former Lakeside world champion let slip a two-set advantage against Jelle Klaasen before he held his nerve in a last-leg decider to reach the last four of a major tournament for the first time in over four years.

In the other half of the draw, Robert Thornton also came through a final-leg shootout to beat Ian White, and the Scot will now meet Mensur Suljovic on Friday.

The Austrian had looked on course to fall two sets behind against Vincent van der Voort, but after the fast-throwing Dutchman squandered a host of darts at a double, Suljovic won nine legs in a row as he sealed his progress with a 170 checkout.
