Coronation Street filming car crash stunt

Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod reveals that the soap is filming a car crash stunt now that production has restarted.

Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod has revealed that the soap is filming a big car stunt now that production has resumed.

After a shutdown of almost three months due to the coronavirus pandemic, the cast started filming new episodes on Tuesday while maintaining government guidelines on 2-metre social distancing.

Speaking to reporters during a virtual press conference, MacLeod gave details of the production trickery that will be employed to make it seem as if characters are closer to each other than they actually are.

"We are embarking on our first post-pandemic stunt fairly quickly after we return," he said. "Which is a car stunt, which is brilliant really.

"It is two people in vehicular jeopardy that will look like they're right on top of each other and touching each other. But it's going to be shot with nobody going within two metres of each other at all. So there's a lot of thought going on right now as to how you achieve that kind of mind-bending, logistical thing.

"Where we will make it look like character A is in some sort of vehicle and is about to be knocked out of the way by character B but there will in fact be no proximity between them or the stunt performers.

"So instances like that, we will definitely be cheating it but as I said, if it's people that don't live together then we will be emphasising the distance between them. Just to keep reinforcing that very public health advice for the audience."

Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm on ITV.
