Former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has said that he believes the show has the potential to rival Marvel with its possibilities for spinoff shows.
Multiple high-budget series related to the MCU are in the works for streaming service Disney+, including shows centred around the characters of Loki, Hawkeye, Ms Marvel and Groot.
Davies oversaw Who's resurrection in 2005 and during his tenure also launched two spinoff series, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, but believes that he was just scratching the surface of possible spinoffs.
"I was in the middle of running an empire," Davies told journalist Paul Kirkby. "And my god I did that 10 years too soon, didn't I?
"There should be a Doctor Who channel now. You look at those Disney announcements, all of those new Star Wars and Marvel shows, you think, we should all be sitting here announcing The Nyssa Adventures, or The Return of Donna Noble, and you should have the tenth and eleventh Doctors together in a 10-part series. Genuinely.
"And I think that will happen one day. If we can shift Doctor Who up a gear..."
Pressed on his idea for The Nyssa Adventures, relating to the companion of Peter Davison's Doctor, he continued: "Yes! You laugh, but did Star Trek fans ever think they'd be getting a Captain Pike series? Ever. That's insane.
"The whole science fiction world is so creative and so money-making now, I think your wildest dreams can come true.
"So if you want The Nyssa Adventures, it'll happen one day."
Davies's new series It's A Sin, set during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, launched on Channel 4 and All 4 today.
