Paul Bradley is reportedly making a shock comeback to EastEnders as the loveable Nigel Bates.

Paul Bradley is reportedly making a shock comeback as Nigel Bates on EastEnders after an absence of almost 27 years.

First appearing in 1992, Nigel fast became a fan favourite for his buffoonish behaviour and unlikely relationships with the likes of Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) and Dot Cotton (the late June Brown).

In April 1998, however, Nigel and his daughter Clare (Gemma Bissix) left the Square for a new life in Scotland after he began a romance with one of Clare's teachers.

The soap marks its 40th anniversary in February and as part of the celebrations, The Sun says that Nigel will be back in Walford in time for the milestone occasion.

Bradley, who also appeared on Holby City for 14 years, is said to be filming the "top-secret scenes" in the coming weeks.

EastEnders has featured multiple returning characters for cameos or longer stints in the build-up to the 40th, including David Wicks (Michael French), Chrissie Watts (Tracy-Ann Oberman), Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer), Joe Wicks (Paul Nicholls), Jake Moon (Joel Beckett), Jane Beale (Laurie Brett) and Ruby Allen (Louisa Lytton).
