More than 17 million viewers tuned in to see England emerge victorious in the Euro 2022 final last night, according to early ratings data.

The Lionesses claimed their maiden triumph in the tournament courtesy of an extra-time win over Germany at Wembley - a match that was seen in person by 87,197 people, a record for both the men's and women's Euros.

Coverage of the game, which kicked off at 5pm, averaged an impressive 11m (65.9%) on BBC One between 3.50pm and 8.30pm, a huge increase on the 6.72m who watched Tuesday night's semi-final victory over Sweden.

The audience peaked with a mammoth 17.42m (78%) as the win was sealed at 7.30pm when Chloe Kelly poked the ball home.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Channel 4's coverage of Max Verstappen's impressive Hungarian GP win averaged 933k (4.7%) between 6.30pm and 9pm, while evening coverage of the Commonwealth Games brought in 3.25m (26%) to BBC One between 8.30pm and 11.30pm.
