The BBC's chief content officer Charlotte Moore reveals plans to discuss a possible seventh series of Line of Duty with creator Jed Mercurio.

The BBC's chief content officer Charlotte Moore has revealed that she is planning to speak to Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio about a possible seventh series.

The sixth series of the cop drama has delivered blockbuster ratings for BBC One over the last seven weeks, with last night's final episode drawing a record-breaking overnight audience of 12.8 million viewers.

The episode appeared to finally reveal the identity of the mysterious 'Fourth Man' - a storyline that had been running since the first series - casting doubt on whether the show will return.

In a statement today, Moore said: "Addictive event television, Line of Duty has kept the nation guessing for the last seven weeks, so it's no surprise that last night's jaw-dropping finale set a ratings record.

"Jed Mercurio is a master of his craft, and I would like to congratulate him and the entire cast and crew for delivering such an incredible drama series.

"I'm looking forward to having a conversation with the team about where we go next and what the future of the series might be."

Taking to Twitter after the finale aired, Mercurio posted a picture of the AC-12 logo alongside the cryptic message: "Carry the fire."
