Animal Crossing: New Horizons becomes fastest-selling digital game ever

Animal Crossing: New Horizons sells more than 5 million digital copies in its first month of release.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has become the fastest-selling digital game of all time, one month on from its release.

The fifth iteration of Nintendo's popular life simulation game was released in all regions on March 20 and has received almost universal acclaim from gaming critics.

According to SuperData, the game has sold more than 5 million digital copies worldwide in the last month, surpassing the previous record held by 2018's Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

The resounding success of New Horizons has partly been credited to the devastating coronavirus pandemic, which has forced much of the world's population into home isolation.

The total number of sales is likely to be close to 10 million once physical copies are factored in.
