President Donald Trump has claimed that his team have been in touch with Boris Johnson's doctors after the Prime Minister was admitted to intensive care today.
The PM was moved into ICU at a hospital in central London after his coronavirus symptoms took a turn for the worse, with foreign secretary Dominic Raab taking over his duties in an interim capacity.
Speaking in his daily news conference on the coronavirus crisis, Trump sent his "best wishes" to Johnson before going on to claim that he may be able to help with his medical treatment.
"I want to send best wishes to a very good friend of mine and a friend to our nation, Prime Minister Boris Johnson," he said. "We're very saddened to hear that he was taken into intensive care this afternoon. Americans are all praying for his recovery. He's been a really good friend, he's been really something special - strong, resolute, doesn't quit, doesn't give up.
"I've asked two of the leading companies, these are brilliant companies - Ebola, AIDS, others - they've come up with solutions and they've done incredible jobs. I've asked them to contact London immediately. They are genius. I had a talk with four of them today and they speak a language that most people don't even understand - but I understand something, that they've really advanced therapeutically and they have arrived in London already.
"Their London office has whatever they need and we'll see if we can be of help. We've contacted all of Boris's doctors and we'll see what is going to take place but they are ready to go.
"When you get brought into intensive care it gets very, very serious with this particular disease so the two companies are there and with what they are talking about, it's rather complex and has had really incredible results. We are working with the FDA and everybody else but we are working with London with respect to Boris Johnson."
The US is expected to be the hardest-hit country by the spread of COVID-19, with at least 100,000 expected to lose their lives in the months ahead.
