The BBC has confirmed plans to launch Radio 1 Dance, a new 24-hour station dedicated to dance music, next month.
Following new director-general Tim Davie's recent announcement that the corporation will no longer launch additional linear channels, the new station is instead being branded as a "24-hour stream" and will be made available through the BBC Sounds app rather than DAB.
"This is a historic moment for Radio 1," said Aled Haydn Jones, head of R1. "Though the station's world-leading influence in the dance music scene has spanned decades, we're now able to stream all of our brilliant shows in one place on BBC Sounds.
"Radio 1 Dance will be the perfect accompaniment to Radio 1, offering something for everyone, from die-hard dance fans to those simply looking to inject some more energy into their day."
The new station will launch on Friday, October 9 at 6pm.
