A peak of over 9 million viewers tune in to Channel 4 to see Emma Raducanu claim a stunning victory at the US Open.

A peak of more than 9 million viewers tuned in to Channel 4 last night to see Emma Raducanu claim a stunning victory in the US Open final.

The 18-year-old defeated fellow teen Leylah Fernandez to become the first qualifier in history to win - or indeed reach the final of - a major tournament.

The feat, achieved without her dropping a set throughout the entire tournament, also saw her become the first British female to win a Major since Virginia Wade in 1977.

Channel 4 broadcast the event after reaching a mutually-beneficial, last-minute deal with Amazon Prime Video which saw C4 take the streaming service's coverage in its entirety, including Prime Video branding and adverts for other programming on the service.

An average of 7.4m (48.2%) watched the match itself between 9.15pm and 11.15pm, according to figures provided by C4, while a one-minute peak of 9.25m (63.9%) came at 11.11pm as the victory was sealed.

Ian Katz, chief content officer at Channel 4, said: "We're delighted that Channel 4, in partnership with Amazon Prime Video, could enable more than 9m people to enjoy one of the most thrilling and historic nights of British sport in a generation.

"Moments like this are what Channel 4 was made for – it's a perfect example of the kind of nimble, uncommercial, but profoundly valuable public service broadcasting that a purpose-driven Channel 4 can deliver."

Prime Video also reported success last night, tweeting that the final was the service's "most streamed tennis match" ever.
