The final episode of Happy Valley brought in more than 8 million viewers for BBC One last night, according to early ratings figures.
The hotly-anticipated climax of the Sally Wainwright drama featured a final confrontation between Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) and Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton), which ended with the latter setting himself ablaze.
Overall, the episode averaged 7.50m (41.7%) for BBC One in the 9pm hour, with a peak of 8.02m as it reached its conclusion.
The figure represents a significant rise from the previous week's 6.07m (39.8%), which itself marked a healthy increase from the 4.96m for episode four on January 22.
Overnight ratings numbers do not take account of viewers who may have streamed the programme live through BBC iPlayer.
