Mariah Carey in contention for number one with All I Want For Christmas Is You

Mariah Carey's festive classic 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' could become the UK number one for the first time this week, 26 years on from its initial release.

Mariah Carey's festive classic 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' could top the UK singles chart for the first time ever this week, according to data from the Official Charts Company.

The song was released 26 years ago and enjoys a mini chart resurgence every year but has only ever peaked at number two, famously losing out to East 17's 'Stay Another Day' in the Christmas chart battle of 1994.

According to midweek data, the track is in with a genuine shot of reaching the top spot this week, sitting just 900 chart sales behind incumbent Ariana Grande's 'Positions' after 72 hours of sales.

The news comes as the British public looks forward to Christmas after a tumultuous 2020, with figures showing that streams of Christmas songs are up 44% on 2019, with 252 million festive tracks played to date.

Wham! classic 'Last Christmas' - which has also never reached the top spot - is tracking at five in the midweek chart, while The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl's 'Fairytale of New York' is at seven and Justin Bieber's version of 'Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree' is at nine.

Fifteen other Christmas-related songs are also in the Top 40 reckoning as things stand.
