Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher insists that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger needs to win a trophy in order to stop him from leaving the Emirates "under a cloud".

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will remind supporters of his worth if he can end the Gunners' seven-year run without a trophy.

The Reds centre-back has claimed that the criticism targeted towards the Frenchman has not been 'enjoyable' and the former England international has revealed that he was backing the Gunners in their shock defeat to Bradford City in the League Cup.

"Wenger has come in for significant criticism this year but he has been too good for Arsenal for it all to end under a cloud," Carragher wrote in the Daily Mail.

"I was one of the few neutrals who wanted Arsenal to win at Bradford in the League Cup last month. I've got so much respect for Wenger and I haven't enjoyed seeing the flak he has taken, particularly the amount that followed the defeat at Valley Parade."

Arsenal have the chance to progress in the FA Cup when they come up against Swansea City in the third round this weekend.
