Olivier Giroud preferred Luis Suarez over Gonzalo Higuain for Arsenal

Olivier Giroud says that he would have liked Arsenal to sign Luis Suarez in the summer but not Gonzalo Higuain.

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has admitted that he would have been in favour of the club signing Luis Suarez during the summer but not Gonzalo Higuain.

The Gunners were strongly linked with both players, before the Uruguayan opted to stay at Liverpool and the Argentine moved to Napoli.

Giroud has netted in all four of Arsenal's Premier League matches so far this season, but still believes that he would have been able to enjoy his current form alongside Suarez.

"When the name of Suarez was circulating, I honestly thought it was a good thing for the team. He would have been complementary," Giroud told L'Equipe. "I'm getting a little more legitimacy, especially this season. But I repeat, Suarez would have been a cannon.

"Suarez can also play on one side [out wide]. It would have been difficult for me with another player.

"We (he and Higuain) would have been in direct competition because he is a pure central striker. Of course, at the time, it would have bothered me a bit. But I was not afraid of competition."

Arsenal travel to Marseille in the Champions League on Wednesday.
