Paul Lambert wary of Christian Benteke burnout

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert remains wary of Christian Benteke burning out despite a strong start to the season.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has admitted that he must monitor Christian Benteke closely and ensure the striker does not suffer from burnout this season.

Benteke played 39 times for Villa last season in all competitions, while becoming a regular starter at international level for Belgium.

Lambert conceded that he is not afraid to rest the 22-year-old if tiredness becomes an issue, despite the forward being essential for Villa with three goals in as many games so far this season.

He told The Mirror: "He's played a lot of games, including for the national team. He's got to go up and play Scotland, so he's not getting any respite.

"I don't know if he needs a break yet, but sometimes it's important you don't put too much emphasis on him at every point. He's young, he's 22, and with the experience he will become better.

"I think there's a lot more to come from him. I just think his performances will get better."

Villa completed a deadline-day deal which should help ease the burden on Benteke, signing Czech Republic striker Libor Kozak from Lazio on a long-term contract.
