Barnsley held by Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday claim a 1-1 draw at Barnsley thanks to Matt Fryatt's second-half strike.

Sheffield Wednesday have held Barnsley to a 1-1 draw at Oakwell this afternoon.

The hosts were the better side for much of the game but Wednesday improved in the second half and might have snatched a winner themselves.

After a bright start from both teams, it was Barnsley who took the lead after 11 minutes thanks to Marcus Pedersen. Having seen his initial effort bounce back off the post, the striker collected Paddy McCourt's pass and fired the ball into the top corner.

Wednesday created a few half-chances but failed to really test Jack Butland, and almost went two behind just before the break when McCourt tricked his way into the area and shot just wide.

The second period started with Barnsley looking more dangerous, particularly on the counter-attack, as David Perkins failed to test the goalkeeper after breaking forward.

The visitors then had what seemed like a clear penalty turned away, when Jean-Yves Mvoto punched away Reda Johnson's long throw, but the referee gave nothing.

Their pressure told minutes later though, when Matt Fryatt brought Wednesday level, latching on to Jeremy Helan's long ball and thumping the ball past Butland.

Neither side was able to create anything of note thereafter and had to settle for a point each.
