Blackpool produce a shock in the Championship as they beat league-leaders Southampton 3-0 at Bloomfield Road.

Blackpool produced something of a shock in the Championship this evening as they ran out 3-0 winners against league leaders Southampton.

Southampton almost made the perfect start to the match when they were awarded a penalty after Robert Harris caught Guly Do Prado, but Matt Gilks was able to get enough on Billy Sharp's spot kick to keep the scores level.

The visitors were punished for this miss when Blackpool were rewarded with a penalty of their own after Gary Taylor-Fletcher went over. Stephen Dobbie stepped up and made no mistake, putting Ian Holloway's men in front.

The Seasiders soon doubled their lead in route one fashion, Gilks punting the ball forward to Taylor-Fletcher, whose flick on found Dobbie, who held off a challenge from Jose Fonte to double his and Blackpool's tally for the game.

Less than ten minutes into the second half, the Tangerines extended their lead even further courtesy of Ian Evatt's header from six yards out.

Southampton fought to get back into the game, Sharp being denied by a last-ditch tackle by Alex Baptiste before Gilks was at full stretch to deny Danny Fox.

The result means that Blackpool move back into the play-off positions, sitting in fifth place, while Southampton remain top, but are now just two points clear of second placed Reading.
