Conor Sammon strikes a late winner as Derby County beat 10-man Middlesbrough at Pride Park in the Championship.

Conor Sammon hit a last-gasp winner as Derby County secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over 10-man Middlesbrough at Pride Park tonight.

The game sparked to life shortly after the half-hour mark, when Curtis Main was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence after a late challenge on Jake Buxton.

The hosts capitalised on their numerical disadvantage in the closing stages of the first half - albeit under controversial circumstances.

Chris Martin was credited with the goal, but the striker appeared to use his hand in guiding the ball into the back of the net past goalkeeper Shay Given.

Nevertheless, Aitor Karanka's men remained within one goal for much of the second half despite their disadvantage, and Boro were duly rewarded for their resilience.

Dean Whitehead, starting his first league clash since October, smashed home from close range to restore parity on 74 minutes following a swift counter-attack by the visitors.

Steve McClaren's charges forced the issue and were ultimately rewarded, as Sammon pounced in the dying embers to steal all three points.

Consequently, Derby move fourth in England's second tier and strengthen their grip on a playoff place.
