Ipswich Town down Sheffield Wednesday thanks to Tommy Smith winner

Tommy Smith's second-half winner sees Ipswich Town beat Sheffield Wednesday at Portman Road.

Ipswich Town have earned their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

Wednesday almost took the lead after just four minutes when new striker Marco Matias cut inside his man and hit the post with a low shot.

Ipswich also went close in the early stages as striker Daryl Murphy's near-post header was saved low down by goalkeeper Kieran Westwood.

Murphy forced Westwood into another save minutes later, as he turned inside his marker and curled a shot towards the bottom corner from 20 yards, which the keeper palmed away.

Despite Ipswich's early pressure, Wednesday took the lead as Ross Wallace smashed the ball in from close range after Matias found him with a low cross.

However, Ipswich hit back straight away as Freddie Sears ran through on goal and neatly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Sears almost gave the Tractor Boys a half-time lead as he raced through on goal, but his deflected shot was saved by Westwood.

The Tractor Boys remained on the front foot after the break as Christophe Berra had a goalbound header blocked on the line from a Ryan Fraser corner.

Their fast start to the second period paid dividends when Tommy Smith turned the ball in after Westwood parried Fraser's cross.

Sears went close to a third when he forced Westwood into a low save, before Wallace went close to an equaliser for the away side with a fierce shot that was heading for the top corner.

Berra had another header cleared off the line in the closing stages and, although Wednesday increased the pressure, they held on to win.
