Liverpool legend Graeme Souness heaps praise on Jurgen Klopp's side and record-breaking Mohamed Salah following their 7-0 win over Manchester United at Anfield.

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has heaped praise on Jurgen Klopp's side and Mohamed Salah following their 7-0 victory over Manchester United this afternoon.

Salah scored twice at Anfield to take his tally of Premier League goals for Liverpool up to 129, surpassing Robbie Fowler as the club's all-time leading scorer in the competition.

Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez also helped themselves to braces, while Roberto Firmino added a seventh late on to wrap up the Reds' biggest-ever win over Man United.

Klopp's men were only 1-0 up at half time courtesy of Gakpo's first just before the break, but they ran riot with six unanswered goals in the second half.

Souness had predicted a comfortable win for Liverpool before the match, and he believes that the Reds will now be able to kick on from the result in their bid to finish in the Champions League places.

"Liverpool were sensational in the second half. I said at half time they needed to treat this as a 0-0 and win the second half, but I did not expect that. After the second and third goal Man Utd were just second to everything and the result doesn't flatter Liverpool," Souness told Sky Sports News.

"Man Utd just didn't compete after half time. Liverpool ran riot and it was like United threw the towel in. This was a team that had been going well, they had showed resilience and had become a team that was hard to beat, but at Anfield they got rolled over by a Liverpool team that were on it.

"There were some spectacular performances from Liverpool. Anfield is a difficult place to come for any team, especially Manchester United. The crowd today were not going to allow Liverpool to lose this game.

"I've brought teams here as a manager – it's a difficult place to come. I've played here as a player – when they are with you it is a sensational place to play football. You make a bad pass, you make two bad passes and they are still with you.

"Given it was Man Utd today and given the season Liverpool have had, I thought they'd be bang on it today and that is what they were. The team gave them something to shout about, big style.

"If Liverpool don't gather momentum and confidence from this then they'll never get it from any result. They have beaten their biggest rivals and they have done it in style. It should be onwards and upwards for Liverpool from here.

"Liverpool can't get carried away with this result. They have to sit down sometime next week and question why it has taken them this long to turn up like this. They did do that in the first half against Real Madrid but then they fell apart. Against Man Utd, that was a really solid performance.

"When you get a result like this, enjoy it. Enjoy it until you turn up for work on Monday. In the second half that was the Liverpool of old. They were first to everything.

"When you watch the very best teams, when you watch Liverpool and Man City play at their best, you think they have an extra man. That's how it appeared today in the second half. It was very impressive from Liverpool.

"Salah has been a fabulous player for this football club. He's consistent and the hardest thing in football is to get goalscorers, people who put the ball in the back of the net regularly. Salah does that for fun.

"He is a selfish striker, arguably the most selfish striker I've ever seen but all top strikers are selfish to a point. He takes it to another level but the numbers tell you he's proper.

"If you give him half a chance, he'll make the goalkeeper work. He's accurate with his shots, a clean kicker of the ball and he's lightening quick. He looks to be a model pro and he'd be great to work with."

Liverpool's win leaves them fifth in the Premier League table, now just three points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with a game in hand.

The Reds have also now kept four clean sheets in a row in the Premier League, taking 10 points from a possible 12 in that time.
