Michael Owen: 'Arjen Robben wouldn't solve Manchester United issues'

Michael Owen says that Manchester United need to change their style of play rather than sign players such as Arjen Robben.

Michael Owen has suggested that signing Arjen Robben would not necessarily improve Manchester United.

The Bayern Munich winger has recently been linked with a move to Old Trafford, but Owen has said that Louis van Gaal must change the style of play if the Red Devils are to be successful.

"We've seen it before," Owen told BT Sport. "We've seen these individual players who've come into Manchester United and almost failed.

"So if you just put one into this type of team then I'm not sure how much they can do. I think it needs to be more of a change of the way they play. A more expansive way of playing.

"At the moment, you can go and pick the best wide player in the world, but unless he's going to get the ball, unless he's going to have good centre-forwards ahead of him making runs, they're just gonna go the same way as [Angel] Di Maria and players like that. I think it's more of a team problem rather than just grabbing a good player and saying 'he'll do'."

Owen spent three years with Man Utd between 2009 and 2012.
