The FIA may ease its restrictions on Russian drivers participating in international motorsport events, potentially paving the way for their return in 2025.
Since the onset of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Russian drivers have faced significant barriers. In addition to Western sanctions, the FIA imposed strict conditions, such as requiring competitors to race under a neutral flag and to sign a document explicitly denouncing Russia's operations.
One driver who refused to comply with these terms is Sergey Karyakin, a top Dakar Rally competitor, who has chosen to sit out the 2025 event.
"Of course I would really like, if there is such an opportunity, to take part in the World Rally Raid Championship in the future," Karyakin told Tass news agency.
Karyakin revealed that he has discussed the matter directly with FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
"I managed to talk to the sheikh, who is the president of the FIA," he said. "He promised that next year he will correct the situation with the admission of Russian racers to competitions."
If implemented, such changes could provide opportunities for Russian drivers, including those who have been sidelined from top-tier motorsport, such as former Haas Formula 1 driver Nikita Mazepin.
