Jenson Button has hinted that he could continue racing next year, but may decide to leave McLaren and Formula 1 at the end of the season.
Since the Woking-based constructor announced that it would run Honda engines again from 2015, speculation has been rife that the 2009 world champion's place at the team was under threat from Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, although the Spaniard denies that a deal has been agreed.
However, Button has suggested that he is about to leave the sport and pursue new challenges, with the World Endurance Championship a possible destination.
He told reporters: "When you are put in a position that many drivers have been in over the years, not sure if your contract is going to be renewed, it opens your eyes to different challenges and different possibilities.
"Whether it is racing, whether it is doing another sport, or something different altogether, for me I am excited about the challenges ahead.
"People always think of it as retiring, but I am not retiring. Whatever I do next year, I am not retiring."
Button has competed in 264 grands prix since his debut with Williams in 2000.
