Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg has secured his first Formula 1 pole position for tomorrow's Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai.
Lewis Hamilton posted the second-fastest time of qualifying but will start seventh because of a five-place grid penalty for changing his gearbox.
This demotion means that Rosberg will be joined on the front row by teammate and compatriot Michael Schumacher.
Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi also achieved his best ever qualifying finish by grabbing third from Lotus's Kimi Raikkonen and Hamilton's McLaren teammate Jenson Button, who lie fourth and fifth respectively.
Red Bull's Mark Webber managed to take sixth position while teammate and two-time world champion Sebastian Vettel failed to qualify for the top-10 shootout and starts 11th.
Tomorrow's race goes off at 8am.
