Red Bull's Mark Webber insists that he was "surprised" to only qualify in second place for Sunday's Indian Grand Prix.

Red Bull's Mark Webber has insisted that he expected to be on pole for Sunday's Indian Grand Prix.

Webber was edged into second by teammate Sebastian Vettel, and the Australian driver revealed that it could have been a result of lack of grip in the first sector of his final qualifying lap.

Webber told reporters: "It wasn't the smoothest of sessions for Seb, but it was the same for me as well.

"It was a close run thing but I couldn't do my last run as I had no grip in the first sector.

"I was surprised to be second but we'll take it from there and look forward to the race tomorrow."

Webber is currently in fifth place in the drivers' rankings.
