US Open champion Rory McIlroy believes that it is "inevitable" he will soon become world number one if he continues to play the way he has been recently.

Rory McIlroy has said that he thinks it is "inevitable" he will soon oust Englishman Luke Donald from the world number one spot.

The US Open champion feels that, with the way he is playing, the top of the game is in sight.

"Getting to the top of world rankings is hopefully inevitable if I keep playing the way I am at the moment," said the 22-year-old.

McIlroy next travels to Florida for the Honda Classic, a tournament Donald is not competing in, and a victory would see the Northern Irishman claim the world's top spot.

"I have the Honda and Doral events coming up and hopefully I can put some good results up on the board and try and get a few wins," added McIlroy, who was defeated in the final of the WGC Match Play event by Hunter Mahan on Sunday.

World number three Lee Westwood can also snatch the number one title with a win at the Honda Classic.
