World number one and defending champion Tiger Woods carded eight birdies in a 66 to move within three shots of leader Reed.
The American is tied for fourth spot on one under with Jamie Donaldson of Wales, while Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy is seven shots adrift after a 75.
